Some of you may be wondering who I am, and why (groom) asked me to be his best man. I can tell you that (bride) and her friends have frequently asked (groom) over the past few months why on earth he asked me to be his best man!
In a way though, I do feel a bit of a fraud being called the best man, because clearly the best man here today is not me, but (groom). If he isn’t, I don’t know why bride is marrying him. Surely she isn’t settling for second best, is she?
As (groom) has told you, we’ve been friends for a long time now. We met while we were both working (mention where you met and enter a story if possible) at Barclays bank as interns. My first impression of (groom) was this guy is the biggest kiss up I have ever seen! He would bring the boss coffee in the morning and arrive at 7:30 a.m. before the rest of the interns. He was surely trying to make us look bad. As I got to know (groom) I realized that the reason he was able to make it into the office so early was because he was out all night partying. I learned that (groom) was actually was a lot of fun. He believed in working hard and playing hard…but in that order. You can’t argue with his philosophy. It is one of the reasons why I respect (groom). He has always been disciplined enough to stick with his principles.
Speaking of work, today I have learned that being the best man is hard work! It is my duty to make sure that everyone’s glass is always topped up and that the dance floor heats up in just a few moments. Another one of my duties was to make sure that no one important was excluded in the photographs and of course that includes the groom. Organizing the guests was easy but trying to point (groom) in the right direction was next to impossible. Why you might ask? The reason is simple – he was always busy chatting and flirting with (bride).

Now I’ve actually never been to a wedding before, and I didn’t have much of a clue about what a best man was supposed to say in his speech, apart from making fun of the groom. I found out the best man is supposed to speak for the bridesmaids and thank the groom for his kind words to him during his toast, but (the chief bridesmaid) said that she would prefer to do that for herself, and we’ll be hearing from her shortly.

She will ensure that he wakes up at 5 a.m to do 100 push-ups and sit-ups each day if he even forgets to take out the garbage. I think that if messes up the first dance, he’ll be washing dishes by the end of the night.

I know, because (Groom) told me so, that the bridesmaids were very helpful to (bride). They certainly looked radiant as they took photographs around the bride. In conclusion, it looks like (groom) is right this time. I suppose his new wife is already influencing him for the better! However, I would guess that he doesn’t even know he is being improved which is a testament to (bride’s) tact. It’s no wonder I think they are perfectly suited and that I wish them all the happiness in their new lives together.

I now have the great pleasure to call on myself to give the best man’s speech.
Some of you may be wondering who I am, and why (groom) asked me to be his best man.
Groom and I have been friends since (enter time period – eg – high school). He used to copy my algebra, geography, biology and chemistry homework. In return I would make him carry my heavy textbooks home from school. A little more brawn than brains is the way one teacher described (groom).
I was delighted when (groom) asked me to be his best man. Actually, he didn’t really ask me, he kinda told me. Anyway, I was a bit surprised because (groom) is well aware of the humorous stories I could tell you this evening. There are some things even bride doesn’t know about him yet! (Groom) it’s not too late! For $20, my lips are sealed and you can have total and utter peace of mind for the next five minutes.
As many of you will know, groom is a great supporter of the (favorite sports team), and he actually wanted to wear his (sports team) jersey to the wedding instead of the traditional coat. The bride for some reason was against this. (Groom) had to settle for a 24” tattoo across his back.
People often ask me when I knew that it was getting serious between (groom) and (bride). I can remember the day as if it were yesterday. It was a Sunday and (favorite sports team) were playing at home. And (groom) declared that he wasn’t coming over to watch the game that afternoon; he was going shopping for some new shoes with some girl called (bride)! Shopping? Shoes? On a Sunday afternoon? With a girl? I knew there was something fishy going on and eventually I was allowed to meet (bride). (Groom) kept me secret as if my stupidity was a contagious disease. However, after meeting (bride) it was clear why (favorite sport) had become second fiddle in his life.
We’ve heard both (groom) and (bride’s father) say what a wonderful girl (bride) is, and I can’t think of anything in particular that I can add to what they have said. I’ve known (bride) for nearly (enter number of years) years, and I can say that (groom) is a very lucky man. Ever since since they met, (bride) has only had eyes for (groom) – well, and Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, but they don’t count, do they?
Speaking about handsome movie stars somehow brings me to the groomsmen. (Groom) has already thanked by (Groomsmen/Usher #1, #2, #3, etc.) for their assistance this afternoon, and I just wanted to say a word of thanks to them as well. They did a spectacular job directing traffic outside and inside the church. I don’t think I’ve seen the (enter # of groomsmen-eg – four) of them in suits and respectable haircuts since their arraignment in court. Only joking of course!
Well, I think I have spoken long enough, and I know have one more duty to perform, which is to read out the letters and cards that have come from people who were unable to be with us today. So, here’s the first card, and it reads:

I couldn’t imagine that I would be loved the way he does.”
After observing the two of them together over the last (enter number of years) I cannot disagree with her. (Groom) looks at (bride) with puppy dog eyes and he has indeed found his queen. I have no doubts that he will be a devoted husband because (groom) has always been a loyal and trustworthy friend. He is the type of person who gives you his word and sticks to it…unless of course you’re playing poker or as a matter of fact dealing with money! I’ve been in a few pickles over the years and the first person I call is (groom).
For example, at the wedding rehearsal there was a lot of fighting between which bridesmaid would get a chance to walk down the aisle with me. It was (groom) who rescued me from being caught in the middle of the catfight. In all seriousness, the ravishing bridesmaids did a wonderful job today. From the wedding rehearsals through to (chief bridesmaid’s) touching speech, they all went beyond the call of duty. Except of course according to my book of wedding etiquette they are supposed to turn their attention to me which has not come even close to happening yet. The night is still young.
Traditionally the father of the bride toasts the lucky couple but I would like to toast them again.

This can be a good thing and it can also backfire if you don’t think before you speak. I’ve learned in my own marriage that communication is everything. And communication means more listening and less talking. In turn, (bride) is lucky to have found in (groom), someone who has the capacity and confidence to reciprocate her abundance of love.
Today I would like to wish (groom) and (bride) all the luck in the world. I have always admired and respected (groom). I admire the way that he has patience when things don’t go his way. Today is one of the most special days in the lives of (bride) and (groom). It is also important to me because by asking me to be his best man (groom) has shown that I am one of his closest friends. I am very ecstatic to be part of this wonderful occasion.
Several years ago I remember asking my mother why people get married. It seemed like such a burden and why would anyone want to give up their personal freedom. She agreed that marriage brings about a change in lifestyle and you do have to give more of yourself but there is a reason why we gladly do so. Marriage is about sharing. My mother commented that the world is filled with glorious sunsets, boisterous laughter and insightful people. However to truly experience all that this world has to offer you need to share the moment with someone you love. To seize the day is just another way of saying ‘to share the day.’
When I look at my brother I see why he will be a perfect husband for (bride). You would expect siblings to be jealous of one other, you would expect us to fight for attention and common goods. However, with (groom) I never experienced any of that because quite simply he is the most generous person I know. He is generous with his time, his money – okay mainly with his time! Nonetheless, he is the least selfish person I know and (bride) and have thousands of tender moments to share over the rest of their lives.
Today is also a day for reminiscing about the many memories that I have shared with (groom) over the years. So if you see me smiling you know that I am rembering something funny he said or some of the things we have done. (You can insert a quick story here). However, today is more about looking forward into the future rather than dusting off the history books.
When I see (groom) and (bride) together I am struck that the future looks promising indeed. The way he brushes her hair; the way he makes sure that she never lifts anything heavy; to the way their eyes meet when we are enjoying a family dinner – these are all examples of (groom’s) love for (bride).
Can you blame him? I am thrilled to be welcoming (bride) into my family as my sister. (Bride), though, is more than beautiful she is also the precise person for (groom). She understands him in a way that I only thought his family understood him. She has supported his dreams and given him newfound strength to follow through on those dreams. In twenty years, when (groom) and (bride) look at their wedding photographs they will see a bride and groom and some gorgeous bridesmaids.
