Writing a Wedding Speech For Your Sister

Writing a wedding speech for your sister is a simple task once you break down the key elements. The purpose of the maid of honor speech is to honor your sister. Even though you may feel like skipping a wedding speech for your sister, you should spend at least an hour writing a wonderful speech.

Perhaps the first thing you should do is read a sample maid of honor speech. This will help you understand the basic structure of a wedding speech for your sister.

First of all, it is helpful to differentiate between a maid of honor speech and a best man speech. They are entirely different in terms of tone. The wedding speech for your sister will most likely have an emotional tone while the best man speech is expected to have a humorous tone. Keep that in mind when you are writing the maid of honor speech. You’re not expected to be Ellen DeGeneres!

The first part of your speech will be the introduction. Although you may think that everyone knows who you are, this is often not the case. Probably half the people in the audience will not know that you are the sister of the bride. Therefore, you need to state your relationship to the bride in the opening paragraph.

You then want to thank the bride for choosing you to be her chief bridesmaid. You should then tell one or two stories about the bride and what she means to you.  If you’re stumped, reach back into your childhood and try to think of embarrassing (not humiliating!) stories.  Even if you’re not particularly close with the bride, you will most positively have some stories from your childhood.

Here are some questions you might ask yourself to brainstorm some ideas for the wedding speech for your sister:

  1. What was your sister’s favorite toy?
  2. Who was her first grade school crush?
  3. What television show was she passionate about?
  4. What was the biggest fight you ever had with your sister?
  5. Was your sister a tomboy?

These are all questions that you can ask yourself to brainstorm an interesting story.

The best maid of honor stories are entertaining but they also serve to shed light on the bride’s personality. You want to pick out one or two characteristics that make the bride unique. For example, if the bride is known for being clumsy you want to tell a story about her twisting her ankle in her sleep.

After telling the story, you’ll want to compliment the groom and say a few nice words about him. Focus on how happy the bride has been since she met the groom.

You may also choose to compliment the groomsmen if you are familiar with them.

As you can see,  a wedding speech for your sister is not a daunting task. It’s only five minutes in length and if you follow the structure above you should be able to write a wonderful speech in under an hour.

One final point, modern wedding speech order suggests that the wedding speech for your sister will normally be right after the best man speech. If the best man toasts the bridesmaids or compliments the bridesmaids you will want to respond to the best man during your speech. Usually, in the first paragraph you’ll compliment the best man and the handsome groomsmen and thank him for his kind words.
